Frequently asked

Location & Transport

+ Where exactly is The Kip located?

The Kip is located in a little village called Ahangama which is situated virtually smack bang in the middle of the South Coast, making it the perfect base for exploring the South.

Only a 10min tuk tuk ride from the hustle and bustle of Weligama, and 20mins to the famous UNESCO Heritage Galle Fort means you have the best of both worlds. Close to all the action yet just far enough away to enjoy the peaceful rhythm of jungle life.

+ Is The Kip close to some good surf?

The coast surrounding us is home to the most consistent, and possibly the best surf in Sri Lanka.

We have endless surf spots stretching out in either direction. With over 15 different surf breaks within 5mins from our front doorstep. From reef breaks to beach breaks, there are waves for all levels of surfers, all year round.

+ How far is the closest beach to you?

We have the most gorgeous secluded swimming beach just 200m away. In terms of surf beaches, the closest surf beaches to us are Kabalana (3min tuk tuk ride away) and Midigama (5min tuk tuk ride away). There are however many local surf spots hidden in between.

+ What is the best way to get to The Kip from the Airport?

A private driver is by far the quickest and easiest way to get from the Airport to South Coast (aka The Kip). The journey is usually around 2.5hrs-3.5hrs (depending on traffic.) Please note, we are more than help you arrange this for you, all we need is your flight details (time, flight number, etc) along with your vehicle preference. FYI - If you are travelling with a surfboard you will need to book a van.

Meanwhile, the train is definitely an experience and super cheap but also a bit of a mission. You just need to make sure you check the train timetable first (see link below) as the trains running to the South Coast (Galle or Ahangama) don't run that regularly. You will also need to make your way from the Airport to Colombo Fort train station first to get on the correct line. https://eservices.railway.gov.lk/schedule/homeAction.action?lang=en

+ Can you help me organise a transfer(s)?

We sure can! For an airport transfer (please see above). For a transfer to/from anywhere else on the island or even a day trip somewhere, please just let us know the exact details (date, time, address) and we will get back to you with a quote.

Facilities

+ Does The Kip accept children?

Unfortunately, at this point in time, our property is not suitable for children under 12 years due to its intimate layout.

+ We are 3 friends travelling together, can we share a room?

Unfortunately not. All our rooms have been designed to accommodate a maximum of 2 people and come with queen beds. We do not offer additional bedding or twin bed set-ups.

+ Do you have AC rooms?

All of our rooms come with AC and overhead fans. Plus, as our property is an old colonial villa it has double brick walls which helps keep the rooms cool. Rooms are well ventilated too which means good air flow and breeze. All rooms come with mosquito nets too so you can sleep with the windows open if you wish.

Activities

+ Can you give some recommendations on what to do while we are staying with you?

Of course, upon your arrival you will be given a little “insiders guide” to the South Coast. This will outline all our favourite things to do/see in the area including the best local hangouts, secret spots, eats, etc..

+ Do you offer surf lessons and board hire at your hotel?

Although our hotel doesn't offer an in-house surf instructor or onsite board hire, we can easily help you arrange both these things and/or point you in the right direction. We work with some great local surf schools & instructors in the area. Generally speaking, for a 1.5hour lesson the instructors we work with charge Rs4,000 (beginners) and Rs5,000 (intermediate). This includes transport to/from the lesson and board hire.

+ Can I practice yoga while staying at The Kip?

Yes! The Kip is the perfect place for you to slow down and indulge in your own yoga practice. We have lots of free space for you to spread out and find your flow. Although we don’t offer onsite classes at this point in time, there are loads of places in/around us that offer daily drop in classes. We will happily point you in the right direction when you arrive.

+ What is the weather and surf like in off season?

As The Kip is located near the southern tip of the island we escape the full monsoon that rages elsewhere in Sri Lanka between May & October. In fact, monsoon season on the south is a bit of a myth. During off-season we do experience some tropical rains but they are generally mixed in with bright sun filled days. In fact, off season is our favourite time of year on the south coast as the beaches are far less crowded.

In terms of surf, May and October generally has strong, regular swells but with more wind. There are still waves for all levels of surfers during off-season, especially in Weligama (7min tuk tuk ride away)
