Georgie & Will
“ For us, it’s all about early starts… hopefully waking up somewhere near the sea.“
So, you guys decided to take a year off work to travel the world. What was your motivation for this?
It was always something we had talked about, at first it just seemed like a lovely day dream. Starting sentences like “when we go there, and when we do this”. We then realised that you can always keep saying “next year” so we just put a date on it!
Just so happened that we got married the week before we left so used it as an excuse for the very long honey moon!
Favourite destination you’ve travelled to and why?
We have two. Malawi holds a special place in our hearts. Very overlooked by tourism but a beautiful country with some real off the beaten track adventures to be had if you know where to look.
Then of course Sri Lanka is pretty special! Our month on the south coast was a dream and we are still enjoying our hill country adventures as I write this. So much packed into this island with beautiful people everywhere you turn.
You have done a bit of volunteer work while travelling, what has been your favourite mission to date?
For Will it was definitely designing a hydro system that used the power of a 100 metre waterfall to generate electricity to a rural village. The mountain side of Malawi where we were staying had no electricity so local men from the community had designed their own system. They had done an amazing job with no prior knowledge or resources. For Will, it was a case of right time, right place as he was apply to work out all of their calculations and construction measures. Unfortunately, funding stalled but we have heard recently that the cash has arrived for the final phase - Can’t wait to see the lights go on!
For G, a trip we have planned for Christmas. We are heading out to Calais to volunteer with Help Refugees and Refugee Community Kitchen. These organisations work tirelessly to bring compassion and love to a pretty inhumane situation. Looking forward to being a part of it!
What do you enjoy doing most when you take time ‘off’ work/ What gets you to slow down?
Ooo “off” work - work seems like a distant concept at the mo but generally for us it’s all about early starts, hopefully waking up in our camper van somewhere near the sea. Head for a surf (if we are lucky), have a gentle yoga session, and then a long and slow breakfast with the Sunday papers..
